Building a Matured Church – By Merrill Leong

Ephesians 4:11-13

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

God has given the 5-fold-ministry for the building of the Church; meaning, every church will have these 5 ministries, much like every child is born with a body with each part supporting every other part for growth. Just as you don’t expect a child to be born without a head or legs or hands, you wouldn’t expect a church to be formed without all the 5 ministries given together.

This further means that every member of the church will fit into one or more of the ministries. After all, everyone has a ministry! It’s a matter of discovering yours and being encouraged to practice them.

Unfortunately, most modern churches today lump everything onto the pastors expecting them to carry out every ministry when Ephesians 4:11-13 has clearly stated that it is the responsibility of everyone with a ministry. This means everyone in the church!

We are all priests and witnesses, working together in unity- for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

In 1 Corinthians 12 we read…

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentile slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

We may not have a title such as elder / pastor / leader, but not having a title / honorific should not be an obstacle to achieving spiritual maturity. We have the Holy Spirit to show, teach and guide us.

Where do you fit in then in the church? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you.
